We offer group mat and equipment classes for all levels as well as Total Barre™, Active for Life, bodyART™  and Total Body Conditioning, as well as specialty clinics throughout the year. Additionally, we offer private and semi-private training that meets your schedule.

Mat Classes

Pilates Mat Classes are the floor work version of the Pilates method. These classes take place in a group setting using your body weight as the primary source of resistance. Focus is placed on precise movements originating from the center or core of your body. Working from the deepest layers of muscles, which stabilize and support your spine and pelvis, resulting in a strong, flexible spine with ideal posture and alignment. Classes emphasize the foundational principals of Pilates while offering modifications and variations to suit each student’s individual needs.

Various pieces of small equipment including weighted toning balls, different size stability balls, flex-bands, and fitness circles are utilized in the mat classes to challenge balance, coordination, and strength. 

Basic Pilates: An Introductory Class

Interested in Pilates but not sure what it is or what it can do for you? Come to an introductory class and experience the benefits of Pilates for both daily life and athletic performance.

Basic Pilates is offered the second Saturday of each month at 12:30p at our Kirby studios, and the third Saturday of each month at 12:45p at our Midtown studios. Cost is $15.00, free to current students when accompanied by a friend new to the Pilates Centre. Pre-registration is required.

Essential Mat

bodyART® is a functional training system and total body workout that is focused on creating strength, flexibility, and stamina. The class consists of exercises inspired by martial arts, yoga, physical therapy, dance, and classical conditioning. Power Yoga

Group Equipment Classes

Equipment classes are offered in a private, semiprivate or group setting with STOTT V2 Max Plus  Reformers, Chairs, Cadillac/Wall Units, Jump Boards and Cardio Tramps. Instructors design each equipment class to meet the goals of the clients in the class.

We currently offer private classes on the STOTT V2 Max Reformer at our Kirby location in East Memphis and will have group classes of up to 6 on the this piece equipment at our Midtown studio.

Pam VanGilder

Pam has worked in the field of dance and movement education for most of her life. She began teaching STOTT Pilates in 2000 and is fully certified in all the STOTT equipment and mat as well as Injuries and Special Populations.  She is passionate about helping others acquire and maintain fit and functional movement through Pilates so they may continue to enjoy a full and active life.  As an Instructor Trainer in Reformer and Mat she enjoys imparting her years of experience with new teachers.

Rachel Hewer danced professionally for Ballet Memphis for ten years.  While dancing, Rachel received her Stott Pilates certification to teach Reformer and Mat.  She began teaching in 2008 and became a fully certified in Cadillac, Chair, and Barrels in 2016. Rachel loves helping people gain a better understanding of how their bodies move and function.  She enjoys working with all ages, encouraging clients to achieve their goals. Rachel graduated from the University of Mississippi with a degree in Education which she hopes will bring greater insight to her teaching as a Pilates Instructor.

Nanci has been a ballet instructor for more than 25 years, in both Memphis and Union City, Tennessee. Nanci has taught for the Pilates Centre for nine years, completing her mat and reformer certification in 2005. Nanci is considered our matwork expert, known for her excellent "by the book" mat classes taught with great attention to detail and purpose! She is also the ballet instructor at Immaculate Conception Cathedral School.

Julie Niekrasz was certified in 2011 in cadillac, chair, barrels, reformer, and mat. She loves teaching all levels and has fun while doing it and watching her clients improve their quality of life through Pilates, movement, and even some laughter. I truly enjoy helping others.

Stephanie joined Ballet Memphis in 2000 and has danced many wonderful roles—most recently Cupid in Trey McIntyre's The Naughty Boy. In addition to her professional dance career, Stephanie began teaching at the Pilates Centre in 2003, after completing her mat and reformer certification. In 2005, she completed her chair, cadillac, and barrel certification, as well as Advanced Reformer certification in 2011. As a dancer, Stephanie is known for her incredible athleticism, explosive jumps, and an amazing ability to move effortlessly through space. Her focus on healthy eating and fitness provides a great example to her clients. Stephanie has a full teaching schedule at the Pilates Centre with all levels of classes.

Elizabeth Mensah

Elizabeth Mensahis a native Chicagoan. She moved to Memphis in 2011 to begin dancing professionally with the Ballet Memphis company, and began her Pilates training soon thereafter. Elizabeth received her Essential and Intermediate Mat and Reformer certification in August 2013. She is also trained in Essential and Intermediate Cadillac, Stability Chair, and Barrels, and is currently working towards full certification on all pieces of equipment. Elizabeth found her way to Pilates while rehabilitating from a severe knee injury. Currently, she instructs both private and group classes at the Essential and Intermediate levels. To Elizabeth, the most gratifying thing about being an instructor is facilitating the personal growth of her clients. She feels honored to witness the small gains and big victories that come from a consistent and dedicated Pilates practice. When Elizabeth isn't dancing ballet or teaching Pilates, she likes to explore the Memphis food and restaurant scene, spend time with other young, creative Memphians, or curl up at home with her two beloved cats, Dusty and Silver.

Crystal Brothers joined Ballet Memphis in 1996, and has danced many memorable roles in company productions throughout her wonderful career. One of the most notable was her amazing portrayal of Juliet in the 2011 season. In 2002, Crystal became one of the first Ballet Memphis dancers to become a fully certified STOTT PILATES instructor for the Pilates Centre of Ballet Memphis, and she has taught extensively over the years in addition to her career as professional dancer. Her dedication and discipline to her art are an inspiration to all, and her commitment to physical excellence carries over into her teaching. Certified in mat, reformer, chair, cadillac, and barrels, Crystal has also completed the Injuries and Special Populations Course and teaches a wide variety of classes from advanced mat to post rehab privates. Her physical knowledge is an incredible asset for a Pilates instructor, and she loves sharing it with her clients! Crystal also teaches adult ballet in the Ballet Memphis School.

Jonathan Dummar is a company member for Ballet Memphis and has been a professional ballet dancer for the past fifteen years with companies large and small across the country.  He brings his passion for movement and his kinesthetic knowledge to all of his Pilates classes.  A recent Pilates devotee, Jonathan credits the practice with improving all aspects of his life.  He appreciates seeing people grow from the challenging work of Pilates and finds aligned and engaged movement to be the panacea necessary to invigorate a healthy body and vibrant spirit.

Christina McKinney

Christina McKinney has been teaching dance for over 7 years, where she developed a passion for influencing the movement of others. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre with a Dance Emphasis from the University of Memphis where her focus was on pedagogy and choreography. After taking classes at The Pilates Centre, she instantly got hooked on STOTT's basic principles and method of tension-free movement. She is currently in-training to become a certified STOTT PILATES Mat instructor, and incorporates Pilates' ideas into all of her teaching to emphasize that movement is the best thing you can do for your body! When she isn't teaching, you can find Christina behind the lens of a camera, as she runs a small photography business on the side!

Martha Heard

Martha has a background in ballet and practiced Pilates for 16 years before becoming a certified instructor. She also practices yoga and gyrotonics and is a registered dietician. The regular practice of mindful exercise has kept her strong and balanced, allowing her to remain active with her ever expanding family, including her grandchildren. Her experience as a student and her own physical challenges with aging carry over in to her teaching. Her motto is “Keep the train moving."

As a Physical Therapist and longtime Pilates enthusiast, Rosemary came to Ballet Memphis Pilates Center for further formal training in the STOTT method to compliment her more traditional rehabilitation training. With over 30 years of experience as a Physical Therapist treating clients with a wide range of neurologic and orthopedic conditions, she brings a unique clinical perspective to enhance one’s quality of life. She enjoys working with all fitness levels and gears her sessions to meet the client’s objectives. Refining the overall function and mobility needed for optimal health is the focus of her sessions. Rosemary received her Physical Therapy degree from the Medical College of Georgia Summa cum laude.

Policies & Information

How do Class Passes work?

Class cards can be purchased for group Mat and Total Barre classes in packages of 5, 10 and 20 classes.  To gain full benefit of the program we encourage you to attend regularly, therefore the passes expire after 16 weeks.  The classes are one hour and are limited to an enrollment of 12.  An intro class is offered the second Saturday of each month for those interested in finding out more about our mat programs and to give you the foundational information you will need to begin taking a class.

Group Equipment Classes

Equipment classes are ongoing and can be purchased one at a time or more economically in packages of 6 or 10. The packages expire after one year of purchase.  A private session is required before attending an equipment class. This will include a postural analysis and allow the instructor to evaluate your fitness needs and goals in order to prepare a program for you. After your initial session the instructor will inform you which class would be most beneficial for you.  Group equipment class enrollment is limited to four at the Kirby location and six at the midtown location. Classes are one hour.

Equipment Class Cancellation

If you must cancel please do so 24 hours in advance or you will be charged for the class. Please call, text or email your instructor if you must cancel and the time of cancellation will be noted. Illness and other emergencies may be excused at the discretion of the Management.

Private and Semi-Private Classes

All pre-paid private and semi-private sessions are fully transferable within the 24 hour notice. If canceling with less than 24 hours notice you will be charged 50% of the private/semi-private fee. If one party in a scheduled semi-private cancels the other party may upgrade to a private session for an an additional $20.00.

Refund Policy

The Pilates Centre of Ballet Memphis issues refunds only to clients presenting a doctor’s note stating their injury or illness and recommendation to abstain from activity. A $25.00 fee will be applied to any returned checks.

Instructor Certifications

STOTT Pilates certification is a very comprehensive program that requires yearly continuing education courses. All of the instructors at the Pilates Centre are STOTT certified and highly qualified to teach all of the classes offered. Clients are encouraged to attend classes from different instructors to benefit from the variety of teaching styles and areas of interest and expertise. At times there may be a substitute instructor for a class. Please be assured that all instructors will provide you with a class that will benefit your health and fitness needs.

Preparing for Your First Class (Attire & Mats)

Wear comfortable exercise clothes, however not too loose so the instructors can observe your posture and alignment.  Bare feet or non-slip socks, no shoes.

Mats are available for use during class, however you may bring your own if you so choose.

Studio Policies

Cell phones should be turned off in the studio. Please refrain from using scented perfumes and lotions before coming to the studio as many people are sensitive to fragrances. The studio is an open space with several classes going on at the same time, please use a quiet voice before, during, and after your class.

Inclement Weather

In the case of inclement weather check the recorded message at the studio and/or the website regarding Mat class cancellations.  Those scheduled for group or private equipment classes will be contacted via phone, text or email from their instructor.
