A group of company dancers leaves tomorrow for Guatemala City where they'll showcase Matthew Neenan's "Party of the Year", Steven McMahon's "Being Here with Other People", Robert Battle's "Takademe" (party of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's repertory and danced by Kendall Britt), and Trey McIntyre's "In Dreams". "Party of the Year" is a rousing and intriguing work which hints at secrets and problems beneath the surface of a big party and haunts the viewer.
Rachel Shumake lets go on the stage as she dances with her hair down. Dancers contract their chests and their arms shake when their dance partner leaves an empty space next to them. "Party of the Year" is composed of so many layers of dance and storytelling that it can be watched again and again and still spark new ideas and interpretations.
Rehearsals are also underway for Interiorworks, all-new homegrown pieces by Ballet Memphis company dancers and staff. More to come on that!
